Ethics & Values in Design (EViD) Lab
The lab focuses on the impact of ethics and policy on technology design and use. It is led by Dr. Katie Shilton, an Associate Professor at the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. We have received grants from Google & NSF and collaborate with researchers across USA to work on some critical projects like PERVADE for pervasive data ethics. Read more about it at evidlab.umd.edu.
I work as a UX researcher with the EViD Lab at UMD. Over the last 1.5 years, I have grown as a qualitative researcher, working on multiple exciting projects in value-based technology design.
Projects
Ethical cultures & self-regulation among computer security researchers
Thematic coding, Quantitative Survey analysis
Working with Dr. Megan Finn at UWash over Fall 2018, I read through and thematially coded 10 interview scripts of Menlo Report (Reference for ICT research ethics, similar to Belmont Report for human research) authors & a hundred ethics statements in research papers from conferences in computer security research.
I also, analyzed the survey with the rest of the team to learn from computer & cybersecurity researchers & professionals all over the world.
Safe Searching Among Secrets (Sensitive Content): An email management system
Thematic coding, Persona Design & Evaluation, CHI Research Paper
The project was centered around email donors whose emails were of significance to the larger community in some ways. I helped code the donor (prominent university professors) interviews.
After analyzing the collected data, I designed 4 personas of email donors to help instruct a team of coders to create an email classification system. The challenge has been to preserve contextual privacy in the system, which is something humans struggle with themselves. We are still working through the persona evaluation phase.
